History of
Psychology Texts and Related Resources
Historical
Overview Introduction

2001
This
table of history of psychology books was compiled in order to solve a
methodological problem: A doctoral student proposed a research study focused on
the inclusion of women in history of psychology texts, with an interest in
examining changes over the last several decades. I was at a loss as to how to
determine what might be a representative sample of textbooks. I decided to
search the Library of Congress catalog for books in the history of psychology,
and did a similar search using the World Catalogue of Books in the OCLC data
base. Since the catalogs do not label a book as a textbook, I had to make a
judgment about whether the book was designed to be a textbook or constituted a
different type of resource—if I have misclassified any, I’d welcome your
feedback. Obviously the methodological question becomes a complex one. A
percentage of citations (rather than a raw number) might control for the
variation in the number of index entries, but in selecting texts one might want
to take the number of pages into account. One way to trace changes over time is
to track changes in books with multiple editions, focusing on the authors as
single case studies. One might also compare a set of books by different authors
published at approximately the same time, comparing them for inclusiveness. The
data are provided here in Microsoft Word table form. The table can be
down-loaded and sorted by columns in Microsoft Word, and can easily be
converted into other tabular formats as well. I included the number of library
copies as a possible measure of the text’s actual use—I don’t know how valid
this measure is, but these numbers are included in the OCLC catalog entries and
were easy to incorporate. I have included the textbooks here and posted them as
a separate table as well.
