Abstract
A phenomenological investigation of the accounts of the pain and illnesses of a twelfth century Cistercian monk, Aelred of Rievaulx. This is a study in the cultural embedding of the experience of pain and illness. The contexts of medieval medicine and Cistercian spirituality are taken into account.
