Abstract
This address discusses my biographical studies of Francis Galton (1822-1911) in terms of my "countertransference" to him: things about him that I like (his curiosity, breadth of interests, liveliness of his writing); that I dislike (inseensitivity to others, lack of tact, racism); and toward which I feel ambivalent (his sense of being near but not at the top of the achievement hierarchy).
